Made forUnknown — an enduring mystery

It bears the arms and motto of Eton College — Floreat Etona, “may Eton flourish”. And it is a ladies’ model. Eton admitted only male pupils, so the likeliest explanation is a gift from a pupil to a girlfriend, or a master to his wife. The archive has never established who owned it, which leaves open the far more romantic possibility the Yearbook itself entertains: that it belonged to the first female pupil at Eton, in the early 1930s.
