## The Aston Martin Reverso

A 2007 Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin collaboration, a red 8 on the dial, and a favour between strangers that turned into a purchase.

Reverso, Jaeger-LeCoultre × Aston Martin · 2007

I had wanted a Reverso for some time, but I hadn’t found the one that felt right for me. Then this one appeared in a way I wasn’t expecting. The watch is from the collaboration between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin and dates to 2007. It was created around the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, with the connection commemorated on the reverse of the Reverso. Even the dial has a small reference to the car, with the red “8” standing out against an otherwise restrained design.

As someone who loves Aston Martin and James Bond, that combination already made the watch interesting to me. There is something about the two names that seems to work naturally together. Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin both have that mixture of elegance, engineering and history without needing to be overly loud about it.

But the way I actually found the watch made it even better. I acquired it from the son of its original owner. He had inherited the Reverso and initially thought about passing it on to his future wife, but she wasn’t interested, because it was too big for her, but it fits my 7.5-inch wrist perfectly. He approached me because he wanted some help selling it, and initially I thought that was all I was going to do. Then he told me the price and my eyes opened pretty wide. At that point, helping him find another buyer suddenly became much less interesting.

There is still something almost like alchemy about flipping the case. From the front, it is a Reverso with an unusual little red “8.” Then I turn it over and the Aston Martin connection reveals itself. As both an Aston Martin and James Bond fan, I don’t think I could have planned a Reverso that suited me much better. I’ve owned it for quite some time now, and I can’t really imagine parting with it.

I also enjoy how much the personality of the watch can change depending on how I wear it. Sometimes it is on a black ostrich strap, sometimes on a mesh metal bracelet, and occasionally I put it on something more colorful just for fun. For a watch with such a strong identity of its own, it is surprisingly versatile.

That is one of the things I enjoy about collecting in general. There is always something else to discover. It doesn’t really matter whether you are young and just entering the hobby or have been collecting for decades; you never reach the point where you have seen everything or know everything. I certainly wasn’t looking for this particular Reverso when it found me, but it did, in the right time, in the right place, with the right caseback.
