# A Tribute in Detail and Colour

A drawing of the musician Sarah Àlainn in a yellow dress, commissioned from a Sydney artist and hand-engraved on the case back. Engraving kept every detail except the yellow, so the colour came back another way: in the strap.

## A Tribute in Detail and Colour

A drawing of a violinist in a yellow dress, an engraving that kept everything but the yellow, and the strap that brought it back.

Reverso

My Reverso is a tribute to my favorite musician, Sarah Àlainn.

The story began with an original drawing. I commissioned Sydney-based artist Kumi Xu to depict Sarah performing, using her yellow dress as the central reference. I wanted the artwork to capture not only her appearance on stage, but something of the feeling I associate with her music and performances. The choice of yellow was instinctive. To me, it carries the feeling of spring, sunlight, vitality and quiet joy, while also reflecting a sense of creative energy. Once the illustration was complete, I wanted to find a way to bring it onto the back of my Reverso.

Jaeger-LeCoultre offers bespoke engraving for the Reverso, working with its designers and engravers at the Manufacture to translate personal artwork onto the caseback. For mine, the original illustration was recreated as a fully hand-engraved composition. There was, however, something that engraving could not preserve: Colour. The engraving captured the detail, depth and texture of Kumi’s original drawing beautifully, but inevitably the yellow dress—the element that had been so important to the original composition—was left behind. That led to another idea. I commissioned a bespoke strap from Jeayou, choosing a warm tone that echoes the yellow dress in the original artwork. The strap subtly brings back the colour that could not remain in the engraving, connecting the watch on the wrist with the artwork that inspired the caseback.

I like the balance that resulted from this. The engraving preserves the detail of the original drawing, while the strap reintroduces its colour. Neither tries to reproduce everything on its own, but together they bring the original idea back to life. It also makes the watch a collaboration of sorts. The inspiration comes from Sarah’s music and performance, the original artwork was created for me by Kumi in Sydney, the image was then interpreted by the engravers at Jaeger-LeCoultre, and the final touch of colour returned through the bespoke strap. For me, though, it remains something very simple: a personal tribute to an artist and musician whose work means a great deal to me.

A balance between detail and colour — between what is preserved, and what is reintroduced.

With thanks to Australian artists Sarah Àlainn and Kumi Xu (@itskx_illustrations).
