A small 2002 follow-on to the Mucha and Warhol/Lichtenstein enamel sets Miklos Merczel’s atelier had already produced — this time built around two paintings by Caspar David Friedrich, the German Romantic landscape painter known for solitary figures set against mist, night sky, or ruin. Merczel has described this set as the first time the atelier laid an opaline finish over a guilloché base rather than painting straight onto plain white enamel, giving the dial a faint pearlescent translucency the earlier Mucha and artist sets didn’t have. The watch itself is unusually serious hardware to carry a miniature painting: calibre 875 is a manual-wound movement with an 8-day power reserve, small seconds, and a date — a genuine grande complication base rather than the simpler dial/time-only calibres used for most of the enamel programme. Five pieces of each painting, yellow gold, 10 watches in total.

### “Mondaufgang am Meer” (Moonrise by the Sea)

Ref. 246.1.15, Q3761409

After Caspar David Friedrich, 1822

Three silhouetted figures look out to sea as the moon rises through a band of violet cloud — one of Friedrich’s best-known Romantic seascapes, its quiet horizon line reproduced in a case-back roughly 3 cm across, limited to 5 pieces.

### “Die Lebensstufen” (The Stages of Life)

Ref. 246.1.15, Q3761408

After Caspar David Friedrich, c. 1835

Friedrich’s late allegory of ageing: figures and ships at different distances from the shore, read together as stages of a single life — one of his most personal, and most quietly melancholic, compositions.
